The 5th Caribbean Economic Forum Takes Place March 27

“Looking Forward: How Caribbean Nations Can Respond to Global Developments.” That is the topic of the Central Bank of Barbados’ 5th Caribbean Economic Forum, which takes place on Tuesday, March 27, 2018 at 8:30 p.m. (7:30 p.m. in Jamaica).

During the 90-minute forum, veteran journalist, Julian Rogers will sit down with Professor Andrew K. Rose, the Central Bank’s 2018 Distinguished Visiting Fellow, to explore how international events impact the region and the ways in which it can adapt to them. Rose, a professor in Economic Analysis and Policy at the University of California, Berkeley, will also field questions from the studio audience as well as telephone, email and Facebook submissions.

The discussion will be broadcast live on CBC TV 8, VOB 92.9 FM, and CBC 94.7 FM in Barbados and on CMC member stations around the Caribbean.

“CMC is proud to once again be partnering with the Central Bank of Barbados to send this programme out to people across the region,” said Lori Weatherhead, a team leader at the media organisation. “Many of our territories experience the same issues and have the same challenges, so having this opportunity to get insight into how to deal with them is beneficial to us all.”

In addition to traditional media outlets, the forum will also be streamed live on the Central Bank of Barbados website and on its Facebook page. Professor Winston Moore, Head of the Department of Economics at the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill, Dr. Ankie Scott-Joseph, a lecturer in Economics at UWI, and Shane Lowe, President of the Barbados Economic Society will moderate the Facebook discussion.

The Caribbean Economic Forum, which began in 2014, is part of the Central Bank’s Distinguished Visiting Fellow programme. That programme aims to give Barbadians and people across the region access to some of the world’s leading economists. Previous fellows have included Dr. C. Fred Bergsten, founding director of the Peterson Institute for International Economics; Dr. Peter Blair Henry, Dean of New York University's Leonard N. Stern School of Business; Dr. Simon Johnson, a former Chief Economist at the International Monetary Fund; and Dr. Patrick Honohan, former Governor of the Central Bank of Ireland.
