“Healthcare Reform and the Role of Technology” is the theme of the 2018 Sir Winston Scott Memorial Lecture, which takes place on Monday, November 26 at 8:00 p.m. in the Frank Collymore Hall. Dr. Carissa Etienne, Director of the Pan American Health Organization, will deliver the lecture, which is now in its 43rd year.
“We have all seen how technology is changing the way we communicate, the way we bank, and even the way we move around. Without a doubt, it also has the potential to revolutionise healthcare. In fact, it already has,” said Novaline Brewster, Chief, Corporate Communications at the Central Bank of Barbados, which hosts the event annually. “Whether it is new medical devices or information systems that allow for better data collection, these advances can improve the quality and efficiency of healthcare in Barbados.”
“We are exceedingly pleased to have Dr. Etienne as our speaker this year. Not only because of the breadth of knowledge and experience she possesses as the director of PAHO, but also because as a Caribbean person, she understands the unique challenges that confront us here in the region.” Etienne, a Dominican, was once that country’s Chief Medical Officer.
The Sir Winston Scott Memorial Lecture honours Barbados’ first native Governor General and is the island’s longest running lecture series. Past speakers have included environmentalist David Suzuki, Barbadian poet Edward Kamau Brathwaite, and venture capitalist Nicholas Brathwaite.
The lecture is open to the public.
