Professor Andrew K. Rose Talks Trade and the Economics Profession

Professor Andrew K. Rose, the Central Bank of Barbados’ 2018 Distinguished Visiting Fellow, began his two-week stint on the island by sitting down for a one on one interview with the Bank’s Public Affairs Officer, Novaline Brewster. During the wide ranging interview, Rose spoke candidly on a number of issues, including trade, Brexit and the future of the economics profession.

On the potential impact of a trade war: “If there is a general trade war, I think it will be very bad for all concerned. We all gain from trade.”

On the future of cryptocurrencies: “I think most cryptocurrencies are bubbles and will disappear within a few years or so. Something will survive, but we really don’t know what. What we know at this point is that these aren’t money.”

On the three main international issues Barbadians should focus on: “The three most important issues are probably in the Eurozone… Brexit is certainly a big issue for Barbados… and rising interest rates and protectionism in the United States.”

On what economists must do to regain credibility: “Economists have to be more honest and more accurate in conveying their views.”
