Church Village Green, the new public recreation facility located near St. Michael’s Row, has been named the Americas Property Awards’ “Best Commercial Landscape Architecture Americas”.
The Green, which was officially opened in March 2014, is part of the Central Bank of Barbados’ and the Barbados Tourism Investment Inc.’s ongoing redevelopment of the area. “We conceived Church Village Green as an oasis in the city, a space where sunset concerts and other community events, even weddings could take place. It’s also a place people can just go, relax and take a breather,” explained Hartley Jordan, the Central Bank’s coordinator for the project. “It’s gratifying to see our beautification efforts being recognized.”
Jordan also confirmed that the Green lives up to its name: the facility is solar powered and utilizes a rain water irrigation system.
Kevin Talma of Talma Mill Studios Ltd., landscape architect for the Church Village redevelopment, said he was especially pleased about the award because the project was executed under tight budget constraints. He also revealed that the project relied exclusively on Barbadian consultants and contractors. “It was a completely local effort.”
The International Property Awards have been presented since 1995. They recognize exemplary work in several areas of architecture, including single and multi-residence, high-rise, hotel, leisure and mixed-use. Entrants are divided according to geographical regions: Americas, Africa & Arabia, Asia Pacific, Europe and UK.
