Central Bank’s Distinguished Visiting Fellow to Hold Webinar for UWI Students

For the first time ever, economics and finance students at all three campuses of the University of the West Indies (UWI) will benefit from the expertise of the Central Bank of Barbados’ Distinguished Visiting Fellow. They will have this opportunity when the 2018 Fellow, Professor Andrew K. Rose, presents a webinar on Wednesday, March 21.

The session, a joint effort between the Central Bank and the UWI’s Cave Hill Campus, will focus on the topic “Contagion in Currency Crises”, a specialty area for Rose, who is a professor of Economic Policy and Analysis at the University of California, Berkeley.

“This collaboration is very significant for us. It’s the first time that students at all three campuses will interact with the Bank’s Distinguished Visiting Fellow,” commented Dr. Ankie Scott-Joesph, a lecturer in Economics at UWI, Cave Hill who is coordinating the webinar. “Previously, the sessions with the Fellows involved students at the Cave Hill Campus only, but the presentations have been so valuable that we decided to open them up to our Mona and St. Augustine campuses as well as our Open Campus students in St. Vincent. It’s also a fitting way to celebrate the fifth anniversary of the fellowship.”

The Central Bank’s public affairs officer, Novaline Brewster, was also excited about the webinar. “This is what the Distinguished Visiting Fellow programme is all about: giving Barbadians and the wider Caribbean access to some of the world’s leading thinkers. This session will give these young economists the chance to learn from Professor Rose, and the upcoming Caribbean Economic Forum will expose a much wider audience to his insights.”

Rose will be the special guest of the 5th Caribbean Economic Forum, which will be broadcast live on television and radio stations across the region on Tuesday, March 27 at 8:30 p.m. On that occasion, Rose and veteran regional journalist, Julian Rogers, will focus on the topic “Looking Forward: How Caribbean Nations Can Respond to Global Developments.” The event will also be livestreamed on the Central Bank’s website.
