The Central Bank of Barbados will embark on a major four-year renewal project for its headquarters, the Tom Adams Financial Centre, later this year. This extensive initiative will include renovations to both the external façade and the interior, ensuring the facility is modernized, climate-resilient, and built for the future.
As part of the project, tenants and the majority of staff will be temporarily relocated to facilitate the necessary upgrades.
A Long-Term Investment in Barbados' Financial Infrastructure
“The Tom Adams Financial Centre has served us well for almost 40 years. However, as with all buildings of a certain age—particularly one of this size—there comes a time when more than routine maintenance is required,” said Central Bank Governor, Dr. Kevin Greenidge.
“We have begun to see and feel the wear and tear on the building, and after careful evaluation, we have decided to act now. This project will allow us to modernize our facilities, incorporate climate-resilient and sustainable features, and create a workspace that is both comfortable and conducive to high productivity for our staff and tenants.”
Commitment to Continuity and Public Engagement
Governor Greenidge emphasized that the Central Bank’s operations will continue uninterrupted throughout the project.
“Our core mandate of maintaining financial stability and preserving the currency peg remains our top priority. This renewal will be managed in a way that ensures continuity, with no disruption to our essential services.” The Bank also reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and stakeholder engagement during the project.
“Before construction begins, we will engage with our neighbours, including St. Michael’s Cathedral, surrounding businesses, vendors, and other affected stakeholders, to discuss potential impacts and mitigation strategies,” Governor Greenidge stated.
“We are in the final stages of planning for our relocation, and once finalized, we will share the details with the public. Additionally, we will provide regular updates throughout the renovation process to keep stakeholders informed.”
While the building will undergo significant improvements, its iconic exterior design will remain unchanged.
“We recognize that the Central Bank’s headquarters is an architectural landmark in Bridgetown, and we intend to preserve its signature look while strengthening its structural integrity for future generations.”
A Legacy of Strength and Progress
The Tom Adams Financial Centre has been the Bank’s headquarters since 1986. At its construction, founding Governor Sir Courtney Blackman envisioned it lasting for 50 years. This renewal project ensures that his vision continues while adapting to the evolving needs of the financial sector and national economy.
